The Internship Insights Survey

National research on how organizations design and deliver internship programs.

About the Survey

The Internship Insights Survey was conducted by Internology between September 2 and November 21, 2025, to better understand how internship programs are designed, implemented, and supported across organizations. The study includes responses from over 200 organizations across the United States, representing a range of industries, sizes, and stages of internship program development. The survey focuses on the internal mechanics of internship programs examining structure, supervision, learning design, and program consistency through Internology’s framework for internship excellence.

Findings are analyzed using Internology’s 5 Pillars of Internship Excellence:

  • Culture Immersion

  • Meaningful Work

  • Skill Development

  • Intentional Support

  • Generational Alignment

This research is designed to provide practical, actionable insights for both organizations and higher education professionals working to improve internship experiences.

What We’re Seeing

Early findings from the Internship Insights Survey highlight a clear pattern: while organizations recognize the value of internships, many programs lack the structure needed to consistently deliver meaningful learning experiences.

  • For example:

    • Nearly half of organizations report operating internship programs without formal work plans tied to learning objectives

    • Program design often varies significantly across teams or departments

    • Support structures for interns and supervisors are frequently informal or inconsistent

These gaps point to an opportunity: with more intentional design, internship programs can better support both organizational goals and student learning outcomes.
